Many patients walk away from an accident feeling relatively normal, only to develop symptoms days later. This delayed onset is common with TMJ and muscle-related injuries.
Why Symptoms May Be Delayed
Immediately after trauma, adrenaline and stress hormones may mask pain.
As inflammation develops, patients may begin experiencing:
- Jaw soreness
- Clicking
- Headaches
- Facial tenderness
- Difficulty chewing
Common Signs
Jaw Clicking
New clicking after an accident may indicate changes in joint function.
Limited Opening
Difficulty opening the mouth fully may indicate muscle or joint involvement.
Bite Changes
Many patients report that their bite feels "off" following trauma.
When To Seek Care
If symptoms persist beyond several days following an accident, a comprehensive evaluation is recommended.
